Thank you Living Earth

Living Earth have donated us another trailer load of compost which will be put to good use around the school. We use this to boost our vegetable beds.

They produce the compost from the green bin waste which is picked up from outside your gate. It is a massive operation which creates some amazing compost at the end of it.

Thanks to Graeme and the team out at Living Earth.

Compost Monitors

A big thank you to the 2 students from each class who are responsible for emptying the fruit scraps bins into our compost bins. These students have volunteered to do this job for the whole year.

They have been doing such a great job. There is almost no rubbish in there and these students are removing rubbish when they see it. The compost bins are now able to work and we are actually producing some good compost.

A special mention must go to Caleb and Austin from Year 7 who have taken on the additional responsibility of keeping the bark bucket full.

So today I bought some baking to say how much we appreciate their help. Well done and keep up the good work!

Pasta Sauce

Today the fabulous cooks in Room 18 whipped up a batch of pasta sauce which they served on crackers to Room 22 and 23.

First they had to cut the leek, cook that until it was soft. Then cut the tomatoes and cook them too. They added some herbs and salt and let the liquids evaporate off.

The tomatoes that we used are John Dunn tomatoes which we grew at school... And we grew the leeks as well.

Then it was put onto rice crackers ready to serve. We looked at keeping ourselves safe by washing hands, using knives correctly and standing sensibly near the electric frypan. They were helped by our amazing Year 7 & 8 helpers who keep a close eye on them every step of the way.

Then we took the food over to Room 22 and 23. It was great to be able to share with the students who had done the cooking and sharing last year. They loved the idea that they were now the big kids!!

Chicken House

The up side to having 6 chickens is lots of eggs... The down side is 6  chickens pooing!! The chicken house needed a clean out so I asked Mr Brown for some helpers. He had Hugo and Dylan who had finished all their self managed learning tasks.

These 2 boys came out and helped clean out the house, put the chicken manure and straw in the compost and filled the house with nice clean straw.

Thanks for you help boys!!

The boys had masks and gloves on to keep themselves safe and because we are cleaning the house regularly it didn't really smell too bad.

Cabbage Surprise

This week we cooked with some of the students from Room 14. They had to cut up the cabbage, and then cook it up with vegetable stock and then serve it on crackers.

They didn't get to eat any until they had shared it with their classmates and the Year 7/8 helpers. We also looked at some maori tikanga of not wasting food and also not harvesting all of a plant. This means there is some for next time.

Our junior cooks did  very well helped by our superb Year 7/8 helpers.

Why are there wine barrels at school?

No, Mr Rush and I aren't making wine in his garage. These are wine barrels which will have some fruit trees grown in them around the school.
We have been able to purchase these wine barrels with a grant we received from the Hornby Working Mens Club and with the support of Hornby Mitre 10 Mega. Thank you for your help.

The wine barrels had come all the way from France. They have got a lovely red colour inside from the wine and Mr Rush's garage smells of red wine.
