Silverbeet Curry

Silverbeet Curry was on the menu for Room 14 and 17 today as we kicked off our cooking programme again. The silverbeet was from our school garden. All the scraps got given to the chickens or composted.
We shared our cooking with the rest of Room 14 and 17 along with our Year 7/8 helpers. Our Year 7/8's work very hard to encourage and support our Junior Cooks.
Thanks for your help

Chicken Lessons

Everyone at Oaklands is a life long learner and our new chickens had to have lessons on perching tonight. Just as we all practice lining up to go into class or to assembly the chickens need to line up quietly on the perch at night, not pecking the chicken beside them, and not pushing in!!

I went down when it was dark tonight to see how the girls were doing with their lining up and it looks like they are going to do really well at Oaklands School. They were sitting beautiful in a row and only made any noise when they had the torch shone on them.

Its great to see them so happy in their new home... and I couldn't believe how much of the greenery they had eaten in just one afternoon!!

Garlic

Last year Mr Wallis planted some garlic and I was able to harvest it just the other day. We will be able to use the garlic during our cooking sessions to add some flavour.

It's drying in the garden shed at the moment and the whole shed smells great!!!

Chickens !!!

Today was very exciting as we had our 6 new brown shavers arrive from Chook Manor. Chook Manor has kindly donated the chickens, some food and some leg tags so we can tell the chickens apart.

The Year 4 team will be naming the chickens and looking after them.

This is the first of the chickens sticking her head out of the house to get a look at Oaklands School. They took a wee while to venture down the ramp as their house in Little River didn't have ramps. They have got lots of yummy plants to eat such as silverbeet which we planted to grow over the Christmas holidays.

Remember you can come and see the chickens before school but you need to use your CARE values so that our chickens feel safe in their new environment.

Gardening Competition

Oaklands School has entered into the Canterbury Horticultural Society's Garden Show which is sponsored by Oderings. The gardening club has been busy working away growing, watering  and building our display.

Today we made scarecrows... I wonder why we need scarecrows ??

The competition is on March 11-13 at the Woolston Working Mens Club. Entry is a gold coin. We would love for you to come and see our garden.

Tomatoes

Our John Dunn tomatoes are growing really well. They have had now had all their laterals pulled off and leaves removed to open them up to the sun... and they are starting to ripen and apparently they taste pretty good to. It wont be long before we can start making some chutney or pasta sauces.

Holidays are over...

Welcome back to a new school year. There was lots happening in the garden over the holidays... I arranged a neighbour to come and water the garden on weeks when I couldn't get down to school.

This watering meant that our veges survived but unfortunately so did the weeds.

Several hours later though, what a difference!!
It was just a pity we didn't have the chickens yet as they would have loved all the greens!!
