Broad Bean Dip

Today we had the first big tasting of our broad beans. Kynan helped pick a big basket of broad beans which were podded very enthusiastically by our Junior cooks. While that was happening we had some garlic cut up.

It was all put into the blender along with lemon juice, olive oil, paprika, salt and some black pepper.

We served it up on crackers and it was a huge success. The smell of  the garlic was quite strong but it all tasted great!!

Chicken Run Tidy up

We have been feeding our chickens lots of greens such as silverbeet and kale. While they love the leaves, they don't eat the stalks and these have been building up in the chicken run. Deacon and Lincoln got all the protective gear on and headed into the chicken run.

We  removed a wheelbarrow load of rubbish. It was hot work made even more uncomfortable with the masks and gloves but the boys persevered. Well done boys!!

Weeding to help Mr Rush

Mr Rush is starting to get our school ready for the Gala and mentioned he was worried about the garden behind Room 22 and 23. I said that the Garden Club could help by doing some weeding...

Not only did we find weeds. Matilda found a birds nest and there were also some interesting fungi. We talked at length about not touching them!!

Thanks for your help Gardening Club who filled a wool sack with weeds.

Silver beet crop

We have got a huge crop of silver beet at the moment so we cooked up a vegetable curry on Friday. The students then shared this with the rest of the gardeners. It was a bit spicy than normal but it was great to see how many students tried it.

Seed Ribbons

A few weeks ago on a rainy Friday the garden programme made some seed ribbons with radishes and carrots on them. They were very easy to make. It is just  matter of cutting some paper towels in half, making a dot of flour paste and putting a seed on it.

These have now been planted and are up and growing all ready. Having the seeds on ribbons means we don't have to thin the radishes or carrots out.

Kids go Gardening

And when you have finished cleaning out the chicken run you deserve a bit of a rest and read.

We are very fortunate to have the Kids go Gardening magazine donated to us, and its a very popular magazine with the students. All the Year 4 classes have it in their class library and it lives in the school library as well.

Thanks for sending us this magazine!!

Chicken Spring Clean

It was time to give the chicken house  a spring clean so Ethan and Max leapt into action. They had masks and gloves on to keep themselves safe and the light rain didn't put them off at all.

After we had taken the old straw out we spread Smite around to make sure we don't get mites. We carefully checked around the house and didn't see any sig of them. Then all the straw and chicken manure got taken down and put into our compost bins.

Thanks for the help boys.

Thanks Living Earth

We are very fortunate to have the support of Living Earth who have donated another trailer load of compost for our gardens. This is great quality compost which we really appreciate.

Lincoln was very busy today moving about a tonne of compost !!!
